Help that reaches people when they need it most.
Apps for Change is a Minnesota 501(c)(3) nonprofit preparing to launch four free, private apps in 2027. We're looking for funders and partners who believe help shouldn't come with a price tag or a catch.
The need
Many well-being apps put key features behind a subscription or pay for themselves with ads and user data. The people who could benefit most, including people in recovery, caregivers, people with disabilities, and people with limited income, are often the ones a paywall shuts out.
The need is large. In 2024, 48.4 million people in the U.S. aged 12 and older had a substance use disorder in the past year. Of those who needed substance use treatment, only about 1 in 5 received it.
Our model
- Free forever, by design. We're a nonprofit with no owners, so we have no reason to sell data, show ads, or upsell. The promise is built into our structure.
- Shaped by the people we serve. Our bylaws require that input from our monthly community town halls, starting in early 2027, goes to our Board.
- Grounded in human services. Our founder brings years of experience in Minnesota human services, working alongside people navigating disability and recovery.
- Lean and practical. Free apps cost very little to share with one more person, so support goes further. We grow through community and referrals, not paid ads.
What your support makes possible
- Finishing and launching all four apps on iPhone and Android in 2027
- Community focus groups and monthly town halls that shape what we build
- Legal and privacy review that keeps our data promises strong
- Hosting and app store costs that keep the apps available and free
Our goals for 2027
- Launch all four apps on the Apple App Store and Google Play
- Begin monthly virtual town halls in early 2027
- Hold at least three community focus groups
How we'll measure impact
We'll report on apps launched, people using the apps, town halls held, and community ideas brought to the Board and built into the apps. We report totals only, never anyone's personal entries.
Ways to support
- Grants from foundations and government programs
- Corporate giving, including sponsorships and matching gifts
- In-kind support: pro bono legal, accounting, design, development, and accessibility expertise
